CROWLEY'S RIDGE COLLEGE: Pioneers Win Round 2 Against Mustangs

Pioneers Win Round 2 Against Mustangs-Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 10/13/22

The Lady Pioneers hosted the Lady Mustangs of Central Baptist College at home tonight in the Carter Activity Center. This makes the second matchup between CRC and CBC as Crowley's Ridge faced Central Baptist earlier this year in Conway in their fifth game of the 2022 season. The Lady Mustangs defeated CRC 3 sets to 1 back on September 8th. The set score would be the same but this time CRC would best the Mustangs defeating them 3 sets to 1. Sets went as follows: 25-21 CRC, 26-28 CBC, 25-23 CRC, and 25-23 CRC.

Set one, Crowley's Ridge would start slowly falling behind CBC. The Mustangs would jump to a 5-2 lead and before you could blink, would increase it to a 10-7 lead. As it would seem Central Baptist had control of the set, leading the Pioneers by three, Crowley's Ridge would look to sophomores Alexis Weirich and Jadyn Hesse to link up for the answer. With the assistance of Hesse, Weirich would land three consecutive kills sparking a rally of which the Pioneers would take the lead 15-13. The Mustangs would chip back at the Pioneers but CBC wouldn't be able to stop the Pioneer attack as the Lady's in green would produce a 6-1 run late giving them the momentum and set 25-21.

Set two, the Mustang attack would regroup and once again gain a lead over the Pioneers. CRC's Head Coach Carissa Winn would call a timeout finding the "Neers down 12-6. When play resumed, So. Paige Glenn would produce two kills back to back and then team up with So. Alexis Weirich stuffing the Mustangs at the net giving life back to CRC cutting the deficit to 9-12. The Lady Pioneers would play their best ball with So. Paige Glenn leading the way. She would end this set with 7 kills. Crowley's Ridge went on a 7-1 run late, to not only tie the set but to take the lead 21-20 off back to back kills from Jr. Hannah Halverson and So. Alexis Weirich. CBC tied the Pioneers and would force extra frames. Jr. Emi Elms kept hope alive for the Pioneers, halting the set point on two occasions from the Mustangs by producing a kill each time for CRC. This wouldn't be enough as the Pioneers would fall in set two, 26-28.

Set three, with both teams eyes stuck on the advantage it would prove to be the toughest set of the match. The CRC defense would stand firm as they won a long volley early on, bringing momentum to the Pioneers. Trailing 5-6 Jr. Emi Elms produced big blocks at the net stalling the Mustang attack to give the CRC's offense a chance. The break the Pioneers were looking for would come late in the set with the score tied 17-17. CRC linked a 4-0 run with the help of Fr. Kinley Matlock on several rally saving digs and a big morale killing service ace. CBC would use a time out in hopes to slow the roll of CRC and it would prove effective. The Mustangs would close the gap but a kill from Jr. Brooklynn Passmore would end the comeback and take the set for CRC, 25-23.

With all odds on the side of the home team, the Pioneers kept the pressure on the Mustang defense in set four. The team in green would produce 7 kills early in the set with So. Paige Glenn leading the way again with 4. The Pioneers now up with their biggest lead of the match, 14-8, CBC would call a timeout to seek relief from the attack wave of the Pioneers. When play resumed Central Baptist would try to sneak points past the Pioneers front but again would be rejected at the net with back to back blocks from Jr. Emi Elms. With the match end in sight, somehow the Mustangs would claw their way back into the game going on 7-1 run before sophomores Weirich and Glenn would team up once again for a block. This one would be to win the set and match for the Pioneers. CRC wins set four 25-23.

Leaders:

So. Paige Glenn led in kills with a season high (16). So. Jadyn Hesse led in assists with (38). Fr. Kinley Matlock led in digs (34). Jr. Emi Elms led in blocks (9).
