Arkansas State University issued the following announcement on June 16.

The university community extends sympathy to the family, friends and former colleagues of Dr. Carolyn Martin Bowers, who died Wednesday. Bowers retired from Arkansas State University in 1997, at which time she was named emeritus associate professor of early childhood education.

Bowers served at A-State for 22 years, having joined the university faculty in 1975. Previously she had taught at Indiana State University and at public schools in Missouri.

Before earning her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) at Indiana University, she completed bachelor and master’s degrees at Arkansas State. Her research specialty was child growth and development in the pre-kindergarten environment, and she often consulted with area public schools regarding the advancement of early childhood education.

The clock tower of the Dean B. Ellis Library will be lighted scarlet Saturday evening, June 18, in memorial tribute to her service and contributions to her field of expertise and to Arkansas State University. Visitation and service will be Saturday morning, June 18, in the chapel of Tri-County Funeral Home at Highland. The full obituary is online.
