Robot

The Academies at Jonesboro High School issued the following announcement on May 16.

Hurricane Katrina 99402C competed recently at the 2022 VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas, Texas against 820 other high school teams from across the world! Participating teams were divided into 10 different divisions to compete against before division winners played each other for the overall VEX World Tournament Champions. Team members who attended were: Drive Team (Keegun Yancey, Ali Abdel-Karim, & Jocelynn Bowen), Scouts (Isha Bhattacharyya & Kyla Yancey), and Volunteers (Anny Victoriano, Lexi Fielder, Stanford Johnson. & Cooper Cook)!

Overall, our team finished with a 5-5 record and ranked 46th in the Engineering Division. It was one of the toughest divisions this year. Sadly, we did not make it to the elimination rounds to play in the Division Finals, BUT....I can't say enough about this team and our extra members who went to be supporters and more importantly, volunteers for this event. Every day, our kids volunteered their time working the queue tables and being scorekeepers and I got so many compliments as to how amazing they all were! Anny, Lexi, Cooper, Stanford, Kyla, and Isha worked as volunteers for the Middle School Spirit Division on Thursday while our Drive Team competed in the Skills Challenge. They then volunteered Friday/Saturday working in our Engineering Division and even asked to work wherever else was needed. Our Drive Team members (Ali, Keegun, & Jocelynn) stayed positive and were courteous to all their teammates and opponents even in the face of difficult, challenging matches. They were exemplary representatives of The Academies at JHS and I couldn't be more proud of them!

And to cap it off, Hurricane Robotics was awarded the Sportsmanship Award!!! The first-ever VEX Worlds Award by a JPS team! Actually, this is ONLY the 2nd time ANY team from Arkansas has received an award at any VEX Robotics World Championships!

The Sportsmanship Award is presented to a team that has earned the respect and admiration of the volunteers and other teams at the event.

Key criteria:

● Team is courteous, helpful, and respectful to everyone at the event, on and off the field

● Team interacts with others in the spirit of friendly competition and cooperation

● Students demonstrate teamwork and effective communication skills
