CITY OF WEINER: Monthly City Council Meetings Update

Update

City of Weiner issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.

I felt it necessary to update everyone who has been unable to attend the monthly City Council Meetings. There are several things happening here in the city that we should be very proud of.

First: The city is getting almost $300,000.00 of street repair/repaving from the State Street Aid group. This project has been on the calendar for almost 3 years now. Although they are way behind schedule, I am hopeful they will be done before Rice Festival.

Second: The Parks Committee has submitted the paperwork for a $250,000.00 matching grant to update our city park. This will include new playground equipment and updated modern safety surfacing around all the equipment. This is just phase one of a multiphase project.

Third: The 1.5 million dollar water improvement project is still waiting for the Osage Indian Tribe to give us the “All Clear” on our project. (The Tribe required a “Cultural Resource Survey” be completed before any work could begin). The survey has been completed and the results given to the tribe. However, due to the Covid outbreak, their 30 day response period was increased to indefinite. We are continuing to communicate with them to no avail.

Fourth: I received a request for input on any other “infrastructure” projects we might be interested in funding. I reached out to our Engineer and we put together a quote for a new city water well which would bring high quality water to Weiner from east of Crowley’s Ridge to the city’s water system. The water from that aquifer is several hundred times better than our current well water. This project would cost approximately 4.5 million dollars. This is a real reach and would take many years to complete but is the only way to substantially improve our water quality.

All of these projects are updated at the regular city council meetings and I encourage everyone to attend these meetings. They are usually held either in the Rice Festival Building or the fellowship hall of Weiner Christian Church. They are the 2nd Wednesday of each month and typically start at eight pm.
