Crowley's Ridge College issued the following announcement on Aug. 1.
The NAIA has announced their 2020-2021 Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions and again, Crowley's Ridge College made the list.
Traditionally, institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year. The NAIA worked to collaborate with member institutions to better reflect efforts that were impacted by transition and adjustments from COVID-19.
"Our goal each year is to earn that Five-Star rating as an institution in the NAIA. It has to do with our students being character-driven and involved in activities that promote important qualities like sportsmanship, leadership, and integrity," said athletic director Paul McFadden. "This year was a difficult year to reach that status due to COVID because there were places we could not go to do service projects or school visits."
Reminiscing over the years as an NAIA program, McFadden continued, "I am probably prouder of this one than previous years due to constraints we have had. It makes me feel as AD that our programs are going in a good direction with an excellent athletic department staff."
One of 157 athletic programs receiving awards, Crowley's Ridge was awarded the silver medal.
