Nelson Mandela was a South African activist and politician who was imprisoned for his stand against apartheid. He went on to serve as South Africa’s president (1994-99). He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. He also worked diligently for #reconciliation in his country and beyond until his death in 2013.
