Arkansas State University reported on April 17 that nine members of its track and field team won events during the first day of the Arkansas State Alumni Classic, while freshman Joe Edwards secured a top-three finish in the men’s 800 meters (Open B) at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The performances highlight strong results for both experienced athletes and newcomers. The achievements are notable as they demonstrate progress within the program and mark personal milestones for several competitors.
At the Arkansas State Alumni Classic, Red Wolves athletes claimed first place in nine out of eleven events held on opening day. Twelve participants set new personal bests. Syriah Boyd and Spencer Taylor led their respective fields by winning both men’s and women’s 200-meter races. Boyd’s time of 23.83 seconds moved her to sixth place on Arkansas State’s all-time outdoor list for that event, while Taylor’s finish of 20.87 seconds placed him fifth in school history.
KG Ryan finished second in the women’s pole vault with a new personal best height of 4.01 meters, making her one of only seven women from Arkansas State to clear four meters or higher outdoors and ranking her sixth all-time for the program. In throwing events, Annika Wilbanks achieved a personal-best throw of 49.80 meters to win the women’s hammer throw, while Egor Kniazev took first in men’s hammer with a mark of 62.76 meters.
John Carswell and Carly Pujol swept pole vault titles with heights of 5.22 meters and 4.21 meters respectively; Gracie Jacobs won the women’s 1500 meters; Kiara Strayhorn earned her second straight long jump title; Robert York became this season’s third freshman winner after recording a distance of 53.15 meters in men’s javelin.
At California’s Bryan Clay Invitational, Edwards finished third overall among A-State competitors with a time of 1:51.05 in his event final, followed by Craig Becker (38th) and Gabe Falting who set his own personal record at this meet.
The Red Wolves will conclude competition at both meets on April 18.
