Arkansas State freshman catcher and infielder Derek Martinez was named Sun Belt Conference Week 7 Player of the Week, according to a March 31 announcement from the conference.
The recognition follows a standout weekend performance by Martinez during Arkansas State’s baseball series against James Madison. The award highlights his contributions as both a hitter and fielder in the three-game set.
Martinez started at first base on Friday night, hitting a two-run home run in the second inning and delivering another game-winning homer in the eighth. In Saturday’s matchup, he opened with a grand slam in his first at-bat and added an additional run batted in during the fifth inning. On Sunday, Martinez scored what would become the game-winning run in the fourth inning and later moved two runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt in the fifth.
Over three games, Martinez collected five hits from eleven at-bats, including three home runs. He recorded four runs scored and nine runs batted in while also executing one sacrifice bunt.
Coastal Carolina pitcher Darin Horn was named Sun Belt Conference Week 7 Pitcher of the Week. Arkansas State is scheduled to play Memphis on Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m., followed by an away series against Troy.
