Arkansas State University defeated James Madison University 2-1 on March 29 at Tomlinson Stadium-Slayton Family Field, marking the Red Wolves’ fifth home series win of the season.
The result is significant for Arkansas State (18-9, 5-4 Sun Belt Conference), as it strengthens their position in conference play and demonstrates strong pitching performance. James Madison fell to a record of 12-14 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
Dylan Farley started on the mound for Arkansas State, allowing only three hits over five innings while striking out four batters. Senior catcher Kaden Amundson hit his second home run of the year in the third inning, giving Arkansas State an early lead. In the fourth inning, Derek Martinez and Cason Campbell led off with singles and advanced into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt. Jake Henry Williams walked to load the bases before Evan Griffis drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
James Madison threatened in the fifth inning by loading the bases with one out, but Farley forced an infield flyout and struck out the final batter to end his outing without allowing an earned run. The Dukes scored their only run in the sixth inning due to an Arkansas State error. Jelle van der Lelie pitched four innings of relief for Arkansas State, surrendering just one hit and no earned runs while earning his first save of the season.
Farley improved his record to 4-1 with this win, while Tyler Lutz took the loss for James Madison (0-3). Van der Lelie recorded his first save. The Red Wolves will next travel to Memphis for a game scheduled on Tuesday, March 31 at FedExPark.
