Arkansas State lost to the University of Louisiana Monroe by a score of 3-2 on April 18 after a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Lou St. Amant Field.
The close game saw Arkansas State, now holding a record of 23-15 overall and 8-9 in Sun Belt Conference play, try to overcome an early deficit but ultimately fall short against ULM, which improved to 21-18 overall and 9-8 in conference.
ULM took an early lead with a two-run home run following a one-out walk in the first inning. Both teams reached base consistently through walks or hits until the fifth inning. In that frame, Arkansas State’s Kaden Amundson was hit by a pitch and Ashton Quiller singled. After both advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Amundson scored on a wild pitch.
Ryan Ashford entered for Arkansas State late in the fourth inning and delivered three innings without allowing any hits while recording six strikeouts—a career best for him. The Red Wolves tied the game in the eighth when Cason Campbell walked, advanced on a bunt, and later scored as bases were loaded after two hit batters and another walk led to an RBI hit-by-pitch for Quiller.
Despite leadoff singles from Arkansas State in the top of the ninth, they could not score before ULM secured victory with their second home run of the day. Holden Hess earned his second win for ULM while Brett Foss took his second loss for Arkansas State.
Arkansas State will continue its road series against ULM starting Friday, April 17.
